As a qualified carpenter, I have found Hempcrete to be the ‘holy grail’ of not only sustainable building but of natural building that seamlessly intertwines with conventional construction. After completing the 2 day course with The Hemp Building Company I feel so profoundly informed about the subject that I can't help telling everyone about its attributes. Joe and Deb are so involved in the subject and the information comes across so naturally from them, that I felt the knowledge seemed to seep into me. The theory session on Day 1 of the course was informative but also encouraged discussion between the participants, an excellent way to engage the class and form conversations between strangers.

On Day 2 I think most of us were in awe at how graceful and simple the process was. Members of the group, who had no previous building experience, got to see what it’s like to stand back from something at the end of the day and say to themselves “I built that”.

After an informative, guided, and fun hands-on two day course you will have the confidence to build your own home using this wonderful method.

I found the course struck the perfect balance between classroom theory, discussion and the ‘hands-on’ session, giving me a sound base on which to design, cost, and ultimately build. The theory was presented in an easy to understand manner whilst also accommodating the more in depth and technical details of the construction process when required. I felt the practical portion was invaluable as I got to carry out all the tasks involved in the hempcrete process under the guidance of very experienced tutors. The lunches alone are worth attending the course for!

Joe leads the class, which feels more like a round table discussion, allowing the group to seamlessly integrate existing knowledge with the benefits and potential of hempcrete. On day two the small class size empowers the individual to take charge of their own learning. Day 1 of the workshop was theory based and provided a fascinating insight into the origins and applications of the hemp plant and its vastly underestimated qualities as sustainable, flame resistant, carbon neutral and highly insulative. We also learnt about the chemical attributes of hempcrete, the importance of mix ratios, curing times and the value of using high quality ingredients. BCA compliance requirements in relation to hempcrete building was covered in depth. Worksite safety was clearly addressed, as was the importance of formwork installation and the different options available for stud design.

Day 2 was the practical installation which provided a valuable hands-on experience and a visual demonstration of the simplicity and beauty of hempcrete construction.

Thanks to Joe and the team for a wonderful experience! Although the theory was easy to absorb and thoroughly comprehensive, and the food great, the most memorable and interesting part of the journey was the hands-on content. I quickly felt a part of the group and the camaraderie between us made for an extremely enjoyable learning experience.

The expertise and attention to detail shown during the event was well worth the time and money spent and I would recommend this course to anyone looking for an alternative traditional building method for their new home or project.
